Bob Marley might have been singing about love and feeling good, but why can't we "get together and feel alright" about the earth? Caring for the Earth and creating change can be a daunting task when you approach it from a macro or global scale. Have you ever written to a member of congress or government to try to influence change? Most people might agree that it is better to leave that type of work to the large organizations who have power to persuade those in power to at least begin to pay attention to the issues. Below is a quote out of Wikipedi (from Environmentalism on 12/13/2009). It points to one of the large obstacles that gets in the way of making changes for the better in our environment and our world. "Because of its large membership, varying and strong beliefs, the movement is not entirely united. Some argue that an environmental ethic of at least some sort is so urgently needed in all quarters and that the broader the movement is the better. Conversely, others assert that disunity can be a weakness in the face of strong opposition from unsympathetic political and industrial forces." Since Environmentalism is a focus on ecology, health and human rights, it seems that the obstacle of people not being able to unite is easily surpassable. Let's assume that everyone agrees that human health is very important. Next let's assume that most people agree to a common set of human rights. From a health and human rights standpoint, there are no values, beliefs or morals that would differ to the point that people could not unite to care for the earth. That leaves one obstacle to discuss: ecology. According to Wikipedia, the science of ecology is "the interdisciplinary scientific study of the interactions between organisms and the interactions of these organisms with their environment." You may not be interested in science, and you may have strong views, such as religious beliefs, that cause you to want to avoid the topic of ecology to some degree. The question is why. Whether you believe in creationism or evolution or something different, they all suggest why you should care for the earth and ecology. Your motivation might be different, but the end result is that the earth is precious and limited in resources, and we need to get together and drive for change! So if you care about health and human rights, and you believe that the earth is precious (as a gift from God or as a evolving environment) then start now on the path to change. Get involved...use this site or the resources you linked from this site, read books, interact...if we all get together we can feel alright!
